The Bold Heart of Bulang — First Spring Old Tree Raw Pu-erh
Plucked during the very first spring harvest of 2024 from ~200-year-old tea trees on Bulang Mountain, Menghai, Yunnan, this loose leaf raw pu-erh is pure first-flush material — no blending, no shortcuts. It delivers the bold, powerful character that Bulang Mountain is famous for: a strong, layered aroma, a robust and full-bodied liquor, and a fast, electrifying huigan that pulses at the back of the throat. This is young sheng at its most vibrant and honest.
Bulang Mountain (布朗山) sits deep within the Menghai tea district of Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, at an altitude of approximately 1,200 meters — a region that serious pu-erh enthusiasts regard as one of the most important terroirs in all of tea. The mountain's ~200-year-old tea forests, rich volcanic soils, and warm tropical climate produce large-leaf material with extraordinary depth and aging potential. First spring harvest (头春) is the most prized picking of the year — the leaves are at their most tender and nutrient-dense after winter dormancy, yielding a tea with remarkable energy, complexity, and structure. This loose leaf format offers the purest expression of the material — no pressing, just sun-dried leaves in their natural state, ready to brew or to store for future aging.
Flavor Profile & Tasting Notes
| Attribute | Description |
|---|---|
| Dry Leaf | Plump, well-formed strands with prominent white hairs (银毫) — a clear sign of early spring old tree material. Dark green with a glossy, lively sheen. |
| Liquor | Bright golden-yellow, crystal clear with a luminous glow — the classic color of fresh, premium spring sheng pu-erh. |
| Aroma | Strong, layered, and high — signature Bulang Mountain character. Fresh floral and wild herbaceous notes intertwine with a subtle honey sweetness that rises from the cup. |
| Taste | Powerful and full-bodied with a bold entry. A pleasant bitterness appears at the front of the tongue but dissolves quickly, giving way to a rapid, wave-like huigan (sweet aftertaste) that spreads across the entire palate. The Bulang "cha qi" (tea energy) is unmistakable — a warming, active sensation that seasoned drinkers recognize immediately. |
| Mouthfeel | Thick and substantial with a fine, smooth water path. The liquor has real weight and presence — not thin or watery. A satisfying astringency grips the tongue briefly before melting into sweetness. |
| Finish | Long, layered, and persistent. The sweet aftertaste builds through multiple infusions, coating the throat with a lingering warmth that endures long after the cup is empty. |
| Aging Potential | Excellent. The bold structure, substantial body, and strong aromatic profile of this first-flush Bulang old tree material give it outstanding aging potential. Stored properly, it will develop remarkable complexity over 5, 10, even 20+ years. |

How to Brew
Gongfu Style (Recommended)
- Ratio: 7–8g to 150ml gaiwan
- Temperature: 95°C – 100°C
- Rinse: 1 quick rinse, 5 seconds, discard
- Steeping: 8–10 seconds for the first 3 infusions, increase by 3–5 seconds each round. 10+ infusions achievable.
Western / Mug Style
Add 3–5g of loose leaf to your mug with 95°C water, steep 1–2 minutes for a lighter brew, or 3 minutes for a stronger cup. Re-steep 4–5 times by refilling. The bold Bulang character comes through even with simple brewing — just use less leaf if you prefer a milder taste.
How to Store
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight and strong odors. Keep sealed in the original packaging or transfer to a breathable kraft paper bag or unglazed clay jar. As a raw pu-erh, this tea will continue to develop and transform over time — the initial boldness and pleasant bitterness will gradually soften, giving way to greater smoothness, complexity, and a deeper, more refined sweetness. Properly stored, it will reward your patience for years to come.
